Triumph Daytona T595,

Triumph Daytona T595 1998 (955cc) Strontium Yellow, 30k mileage. Full 12 months MOT (no tax, currently SORN). Regular service history, dealer serviced until 2006. Fitted with Datatool motion alarm & Scottoiler.

Loads of extras ... black screen but comes with clear spare, pillion seat / race hump, paddock stand (genuine Triumph), 9608000 race can fitted but comes with original exhaust (immaculate condition) as well, Bagster leather tank bag, luggage rack and detachable clear toughened plastic headlamp protectors.

Ducati Multistrada 1200 (2011 onwards)

Imagine a bike that transforms with the press of a button to become a sports bike, a tourer, an enduro or urban commuter.
Ducati's Multistrada 1200 is exactly that, four motorcycles in one - it's a 'cross genre'. Instead of the rider adapting to the environment, the bike does ... brilliantly.
It gives you a choice of power modes ranging from a blistering 150bhp for adrenalin junkies, to a subdued 100bhp for steady commuters.
Switchable power maps regulated with ride by wire technology is nothing new, but all four modes have their own levels of traction control (DTC) as on Ducati's S-model superbikes and streetfighter. The suspension is fully adjustable with a Sachs monoshock for the rear and Marzocchi USD forks up front; and optional ABS.
Higher-spec S models boast an electronic suspension system (DES) developed with Ohlins, that adjusts depending on your chosen mode and whether you're riding alone, with a pillion or with luggage.
ABS is included and while the Multistrada 1200S Touring Edition is complemented with panniers, heated grips and a centre stand, the Sports Edition has the same spec but with splashes of carbon fibre instead. After riding both tricked-up versions on the world launch in Lanzarote, I'm pretty convinced Ducati has produced something very special indeed. The bike is powered by the 1198's Testastretta Evoluzione engine, revised to be smoother at low revs by altering the engine's overlap angle. This is how far in degrees the crankshaft rotates while the inlet and exhaust valves are all open together.
The longer they're open simultaneously, the more air and fuel is pulled into the cylinder, creating more power. The downside can be a roughness at low revs, which is less important for a superbike like the 1198. But the Multistrada requires a much smoother combustion, achieved by reducing the overlap angle.
Where it was previously set at 41 degrees for the 1198, it's been cut to just 11; hence the name of the bike's 150bhp engine is 'Testastretta 11 degrees.' The result is smoother combustion, increased fuel economy by up to 12 per cent and lower exhaust emissions by around 65 per cent.
It's designed to be a sophisticated cross-genre bike so the performance varies according to which of the four modes you choose. 'Sport' offers full power of 150bhp at 9,250rpm, level 4 DTS and a responsive power delivery to match the stiffer suspension set up. The Touring mode has equal power but it feels slightly softer, with the DTS at level 5 and a smoother power delivery. Urban or Enduro modes dampen the surge to just 100bhp. The DTS uses level 6 for town riding and level 2 for off road, with the suspension set high enough to cope with the demands of rougher terrain.
The Touring Edition bike had me instantly hooked. Open the throttle in 'Sport' and a potent 150bhp is unleashed, punching the horizon with the front wheel fighting to lift off the road. As the revs rocket past 4,000rpm, the pull is utterly addictive and totally relentless until the power eventually suffocates in the 10,000rpm red line. It's blisteringly, brilliantly quick.
On the equally powered 'Touring' mode, the sensation is very similar, but both the suspension and power delivery feel more forgiving, which suits real world riding where road surfaces are far from perfect. Adaptations to the gearbox and final drive ratios mean the vibrations in high revs are subdued enough to offer character without irritation, with sixth gear performing more like an overdrive.
Straight line blasts could propel you to around 150mph with the manually adjustable screen and hand guards shielding you from the blast fairly adequately. But it's the twisties where the Multistrada 1200 really comes to life. It handles with the confidence of a tall sports bike and feels securely planted in bends.
Slicing through the six speed gearbox is as effortless as feathering the light clutch in traffic and stamping down the gears is smoothed by a 'slipper system' which prevents the rear end from losing shape. It's a proper playful bike that can hold the attention of an experienced rider, or nurse a novice through a variety of circumstances. I even rode pillion to see how it handles extra weight and the punch almost somersaulted me off the back seat like a kamikaze gymnast.
Away from the S-bends of the mountains and into the dawdling town traffic, the 'Urban' mode makes perfect sense. Holding a steady 30mph, the power delivery is noticeably kinder than the urgent 'Sport' setting and is not snatchy or abrasive. But where the Multistrada impressed me time and time again, the switchable ABS system felt surprisingly crude, especially considering the wealth of technology on board. It kicks in earlier than expected with series of uncomfortable quick fire shudders. Riders with big feet may find their heels catching on the pillion foot peg brackets and the touring bike's centre stand.
While Ducati is adamant the Multistrada 1200 can handle tough off road challenges, it looks far too elegant to risk running through the rough stuff. Budding Dakar riders may find it is more than capable, but set on 'Enduro' it will appeal to road riders venturing off the beaten track.
As the day drew to an end so did my tank of fuel. Ducati claim a full 20 litres should last 248 miles at an average 75mph. My spirited ride was undoubtedly thirsty work for the Multistrada, but I reckon my average consumption was around 42mpg which is perfectly acceptable, especially if you're heavy handed.
I'm quite sure the Multistrada 1200 will hold it's own against the stiff and established competition of bikes like BMW's 1200GS and KTM's SMT and it appears to sit neatly between the two in terms of practicality like luggage capacity, tank range and weather protection. The sheer strength of the engine is superb, the lack of obvious compromise quite astonishing and the price is steep (even considering the bike's outstanding ability and technology).
There is no doubt that the Multistrada 1200 is special. It's not four separate bikes, of course, and the electronic gadgetry (useful as it is) works as well as it does only because the basic bike is so good and the Touring Edition is the best of the bunch.

Ducati Monster 796 (2011 onwards)

Ducati Monster 796 (2011 onwards)

The Monster has been an important model for Ducati. Its superbikes might have grabbed more headlines, but it is the Monster which has kept the production line moving with almost a quarter-of-a-million bikes sold since 1994.
The new generation 696 Monster, launched in 2008 was the first Ducati model to sell more than 10,000 in one year.
The new version - as well as a thorough mechanical revamp adopted a new riding position that was a noticeable improvement over the stretched arms versions that had preceded it. The Monster 1100 followed six months later, combining the practical new ergonomics with the impressive power of the Hypermotard and Multistrada 1078cc air-cooled V-twin engine. And now there's another addition to the family, the 2011 Monster 796.
Most comfortable yet
This new middleweight is clearly the most comfortable Monster yet. The tapered aluminium handlebars are 20mm higher and the four-point adjustable levers ensure riders of all hand sizes can find a setting that suits them. The 800mm seat height is 10mm lower than the 1100 Monster and while the 796 retains the traditional trellis frame, a new sub-frame makes the aftermarket pillion handles easier to add. It's supposed to sit neatly between the 696 and 1100, so it's powered by the 803cc Desmodue engine which offers a friendly, but punchy 86bhp at 8,250rpm and 58lb ft of torque at 6,250rpm.
Power delivery is predictable and smooth, with the twin's characteristic vibes only really noticeable if you scream the engine like it's an in-line four. A torquey lump always encourages a lazy rider and the 796 responds well if you stick it in third gear and leave it there. However, it is less forgiving if you drop to a village dawdle in sixth (oops!).
There's nothing really crazy-new about it, it's simply another Monster which is certainly no bad thing. Riding the 796 on the world launch in Bologna, I didn't expect this new Duke to be a complete revelation but I was surprised at just how easy it felt, largely due to the more natural riding stance.
Twisted spaghetti
The Italians have a habit of picking the twistiest roads imaginable to highlight a bike's agility and this launch was no different. Endless switchbacks curled around hillsides like stands of twisted spaghetti, demanding my full attention and the putting the 796 through paces unlikely to be replicated in Britain (unless you're lucky enough to live in a very special place).
Weighing an easily manageable 167kg, it flicks from side to side with confidence and reassuring stability. The Showa 43mm upside down forks are non-adjustable but absorb most challenges without too much complaint, the rear benefits from a preload and rebound adjustable Sachs monoshock.
The 796 is quite capable of delivering an enthusiastic ride, satisfying a sporty rider's fix for knee-down action (with 30mm more ground clearance than the 696) and the random lifting of one wheel, but slower corners do need slightly more input on the bars than Yamaha's new naked middleweight FZ8 and if the asphalt is less than smooth, the front end feels hard worked.
Steering lock is certainly less restrictive than on some of the original Monsters, but it's still a challenge to complete a U-turn without stopping to add a dab of foot or a quick paddle backwards.
It's nigh on impossible to find serious fault with the 796. It is predictably sexy-looking, fun to ride, with an oh-so-practical right angled tyre valve on the front rim and even the mirrors are OK (who'd have thought of saying that about a Ducati?). It's the kind of bike that will encourage a relative newbie to explore new riding skills rather than scare the bejesus out of them. What's more, advanced riders won't get bored waiting for an adrenalin rush. Snapping the throttle back won't exactly turn the world inside out, but it will inject a few giggles into your ride.
And should you need to scrub speed in a hurry, there are double discs, with four-piston radial callipers for the front and a single disc, two-piston on the rear. Grabbing a fistful hauls the anchors on progressively and very effectively and ABS (available as an option) feels far more refined than on the Multistrada 1200. It's the same system with different software. Where it sometimes kicks in prematurely on the tall adventure bike, I couldn't activate the Monster's at all on dry asphalt. It's an impressive, unobtrusive safety net.
Colour schemes
In modern Monster style, you can personalise your bike in an instant. Ducati launched its Monster Art project last year, which is basically 10 additional colours over the three standard options (in this case red, white and black) that come in the form of a kit. You simply switch the tank panels, front mudguard bikini fairing and single seat cover for the replacement colours you prefer.
Ducati has gone one step further for the 796 by introducing 'Logomania'. It retains three of the most popular Monster Art colour schemes and adds seven more to celebrate various historical bikes and events throughout Ducati's history.
The Monster 796 is a fun middleweight with all the sex-appeal of its bigger brother, more poke than the entry-level version and the most comfortable riding position of all. So if you fancy a Monster, the 1100 is too big and the 696 too small, perhaps the 796 will be just right.

Harley-Davidson 48 (2010 onwards)

Harley have dusted off their peanut-shaped fuel tank from the late 40s and, as a fitting tribute to the iconic styling, they have mounted it on their last generation Sportster. But only after giving the bike a totally new, old-school makeover.
The 48 is quite possibly the coolest Harley-Davidson currently available. Most Harley-Davidson owners flick through the fat accessories catalogue before they order their new 'Hog'. There's nothing quite as shameful to an H-D owner as turning up at a bike meeting riding exactly the same Harley as somebody else. It's just not done.
But quite honestly, apart from the obligatory louder pipes, the Americans have done such a super job on this low rider, there's very little tweaking to be done. It's so sharp, it looks like it's already been extensively personalised by a custom shop way before they handed you the keys.

Minimalist shine

It's remarkable how compact the bike is and with its low seat height, it's very accessible to shorter riders and folk who don't like a perched-high-on-a-bar-stool ride. The small tank, (a point of discussion that's fuelled the critics and had Harley-Davidson die-hard fans defending the Yanks' honour), the fat front tyre, the low slung handlebars and the 'chopped' rear end contribute to a genuine custom look.
Less is most definitely more in this case, and in contradiction to so many American cruisers, the 48 shines through its minimalism, not through lashings of unnecessary mirrored chrome. The dashboard is also fuss free, with a simple speedo, albeit with a built in digital display for total mileage, clock and trip distance.
Fancier details are in the mirrors that look like they're hovering under the handlebars. They take some getting used to, but they offer a practical view on the 'objects that are closer than they appear'. Even though it's uncluttered and quite un-Harley-ish in that respect, the 48 still attracts a great deal of attention.
And it's a head turner in more ways than one. This understated bike has a fair amount of poke which is a pleasant surprise when the lights turn green. Harley-Davidson traditionally refuses to announce power figures and they always reply to the question 'How much?' the same way that Rolls Royce does: 'Enough'. The 48 goes one step further than that. Bury your head in the peanut tank and keep the throttle pinned flat out in fifth and you'll see close to 120 mph on the dial. That's as fast as an XR 1200 and it's fast full stop for a bike like this.

Japanese coffee table

Cruising at 90 mph isn't physically impossible but the ergonomics don't really invite you to maintain speeds over the legal limit. This bike is more about being cool than being fast. And there's certainly no shame in that. The seating position isn't exactly a natural fit though. It's Japanese-coffee-table low, with a long reach for your feet and hands to the 'pegs and 'bars.
Granted, it's not the most comfortable riding position and it does force your back to take the brunt of the road's imperfections. But it looks cool. And that's what it's all about. Perhaps it's a coincidence, perhaps it's Harley-Davidson's ingenious planning, but with only eight litres of fuel on board, you'll have to schedule in refuelling stops way before your body starts complaining. So any discomfort is contained in the short bursts between pit stops.
Along with the ergonomics, the steering also feels strange at first. Tipping in is surprisingly easy, but once down, the Harley seems to want to stay there where most bikes automatically try to return to an upright position as soon as you release the pressure on the inside handlebar. A traditional Sportster doesn't normally behave this way in corners and it could be instigated by the fat front tyre. But once you get used to it, the 48 is definitely not a bad cornering bike.
It's also not a very fast cornering bike either, since ground clearance is so obviously and restrictively limited. Although the pegs scrape easily enough, the bike does feel quite stable, especially compared with some other less forgiving cruisers and chopper

Drag queen
Nevertheless, it's wise not to get too carried away on bumpy roads. When the road surface is about as smooth as a drag queen's chin, complete with a five o'clock shadow and a bout of too-many late-nights pimples, then the 48 can get a bit wobbly as the suspension stroke is short and the damping rather hard.
If you do overcook things, the brakes offer steady reassurance and adequate stopping power. They may not have much finesse about them but they do the job just fine. And if you really need to stop in a hurry, the rear brake is a handy back up to the single front disc which has a tough enough job in getting the 250 kilograms of American Metal to a standstill.
The Forty Eight is a cracking bike for the twisty roads as long as you consider its limitations, but in town the low slung seat and splayed riding position makes life hard work. Walking pace manoeuvres require concentration and patience as your arms and legs are stretched out in front of you.
There are plenty of other bikes better equipped for town riding and undoubtedly with more practical attributes than the Harley-Davidson 48, but it's not so easy to find one that generates as much attention. Showing off is what the 48 does best; the pleasant rideability just comes as a welcome bonus.

Kawasaki ZX-10R (2011)

Kawasaki knows how to build top notch sports bikes, that is not really at issue here, but keeping its ZX-10R superbike at the top of its sector is probably a tougher task.
The company has to juggle the expectation and demands of the public with its own development budget and ever-changing technology to decide how extensive the revisions should be for each model year.
In this case, they've tickled not tweaked their superb ZX-10R superbike with subtle changes for 2010. This very definitely does not qualify as a revamp.
Sports bike owners don't all steam about on perfectly surfaced race tracks, many never even turn a wheel on circuit, but keeping this bike road-bound means it will never stretch its legs beyond an enthusiastic trot.

Instantly comfortable

It is certainly capable of blistering lap times on track, but my test came after a day at Germany's Nurburgring - it comprised an early start and a three-hour road ride to Brussels.
It's six in the morning, the whole world is still asleep as the ZX-10R is glistening in the early morning light. Cold tyres, damp roads and a 270 km ride won't dampen my spirits - this is one of my favourite sports bikes, despite the lurid green paint scheme.
I throw a leg over the 830mm seat and feel comfortable instantly. The Zed's riding position feels sporty yet natural and unforced, it always has and this 2010 model feels no different. In fact I'm beginning to wonder if I'll notice this year's revisions at all. Kawasaki hasn't exactly gone back to the drawing board to remodel its litre sports bike.
Instead, it's been dusted with a sprinkling of 'improvements'. I wonder whether they are enough to tempt owners to upgrade. Going on the facts alone, I'd say not, but this ride should confirm my suspicions.

Smoothest ever

Kawasaki produced its smoothest ever 'sports' transmission for the 2009 ZX-6R. You could slide through the gearbox with seamless fluidity and the 2010 ZX-10R benefits from similar technology; the engineering team has modified the gearbox internals to reduce the slack in the shift mechanism, giving the rider a more direct feel from the lever, and it works!
That's not to say the old ZX-10R had a bad box and only a back-to-back test would confirm whether this revision is drastically noticeable. It is exceptionally smooth though and it feels faultless from the off, so it's quite ironic that there's barely any need to glide through all six gears on the road. First gear alone is good for triple figures (if you're happy to leave your bike screaming like a banshee).

Pool of potential

I decide to stick it in second and leave it there. With the revs dancing around the 8,000rpm mark there is more than enough punch to kiss or crowd the legal limit for the faster sections and it can be blisteringly quick. The rev counter is clearly divided into white, green and red sections. In the white, (up to 6,000rpm) the engine feels subdued, it's most responsive in the green (6-8000rpm) and it runs to the limiter in the red.
Peak power waits patiently for me at 12,500rpm and as I swim about in a pool of potential, there's a silky smoothness throughout the entire rev range.
In second or third gear the engine braking is strong enough to scrub speed for the villages and gloomier wet corners without feeling like I've just ridden into a pile of wet concrete and the throttle response is smooth, constant and an absolute pleasure. As I weave through Germany's waking winding roads, I occasionally dip into third gear, barely touch fourth and only slide to fifth and sixth on the motorway home stretch just because it's rude not to.
Yes the ZX-10R can be a lunatic if you unleash its full potential, but it can also be quite tame and respectful too. Either way, it's seriously good fun.

Running wide

Back in 2008, racer Jeremy McWilliams handed me a ZX-10R, saying it wasn't a great ride straight out of the box, but that he had tweaked it and I would love it. He wasn't wrong, and I've been fortunate to have ridden several models on race tracks with suspension and tyre experts on hand for advice.
Perhaps I've been spoiled? This bike is on Pirelli Diablo Corsa III tyres and standard suspension settings - and I'm not comfortable with it. Cornering feels more difficult than it should be; it feels like the 43mm inverted forks are made of wood and the front wheel is trying to turn in treacle. There's nothing light or effortless about it and just I'm relieved to know from past experience that it doesn't have to stay that way.
Throwing fresh rubber at the rims and taking advantage of the fully adjustable suspension front and rear would transform this bike into something far more enjoyable. Right now, it's running wide mid corner like it's allergic to apexes and it's reluctant to turn in on tight mini roundabouts. First job would be to get on the forums and start tweaking the suspension, or better still, ride it for a few weeks and then talk with your dealer.

Smoke and mirrors

The ZX-10R was once known for its violent headshakes but these have been calmed over recent years by introducing a steering damper. Like the gearbox, the adjustable twin-tube Öhlins steering damper has also received internal modifications for improved performance. As I continue towards Belgium and the day's gentle dawn, the roads dry out and I push a little harder. Although the front stays steady and down over the road's worst surfaces at speed, I can't detect any difference in the upgraded steering damper.
Apart from the aesthetic changes, that's really the bottom line for this 2010 bike. The revisions and upgrades are all there on paper, but very few are actually noticeable during a road ride and I suspect even a highly experienced rider on track would be hard pressed to note where the improvements count. The new bodywork is more obvious, it gives the ZX-10R a lighter, more compact appearance. It's all a bit smoke and mirrors though as the bike's weight and size have only been visually reduced, as has the new 'more compact' muffler.
The ZX-10R can be all you need and more from a 1000cc sports bike, it's a brilliant bit of competitively priced kit. And thanks to the 2010 revisions, it looks sharper and tidier than its predecessor, but I'm not convinced it is.
